An Inside Look At Energy Efficiency In A World Class Food Manufacturing Facility

The Frito lay site in Killingly CT is approximately 500,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.  The facility produces many core products for Frito-Lay including Lays and Ruffles potato chips, Smart food popcorn, Doritos, Tostitos, Santitas and Fritos.  The plant’s service area stretches from Maine through New York City.  This plant is one of the top six volume plants for Frito-Lay producing in excess of 100 million pounds of finished product annually.

The Killingly, CT site operates a Combined Heat and Power cogeneration unit consisting of a 4.6 MW Solar turbine and waste heat boiler that produces about 95% of the electric for the site as well as 90% of the process steam.  They also have a heat recovery system on our fryer that covers about 50% of the building heating load in the winter.  The plant is now 100% LED lighting both inside and outside of the facility and we have recently expanded our building management system for efficient HVAC control.

Please note no open toed or high heeled shoes or sneakers will be allowed.  Safety glasses and work boots or safety shoes are recommended.  All jewelry will need to be removed and no exposed buttons are allowed (t shirts are recommended).  They do have some smocks available people with button down shirts but probably not enough for everyone.

Also please be advised that anyone working for Frito Lay competitors in the chip/food industry will not be allowed to tour the facility. 

For those that would like to network after the tour, we will gather for dinner at a local restaurant for dinner.  Please select the correct ticket (tour only or tour and dinner) when registering.

Our Site Hosts

Roger Gieseke is the facilities manager with over 12 years’ experience with Frito Lay.  Roger’s responsibilities include power and steam generation, resource conservation, compressed air, HVAC, waste water and environmental.

Sil Quenga is the site technical director with over 20 years’ experience with Frito Lay. Sil’s responsibilities include management of facilities and equipment maintenance.
